23 Complete Treynor Baby Sitting Clinic

After school on four of the five Mondays in April, 30 students in Treynor Elementary stayed after school for more education. They took classes in baby sitting and child safety from Mary Kouris of the West Pottawattamie County Extension Service. Assisting in the baby-sitting clinic was Carol Klein. The classes are offered annually at this time to Treynor fifth and sixth grade students in preparation for the summer season.

"These students will be called upon to look after their own younger siblings or neighborhood children this summer. Some have or will soon start taking baby-sitting jobs. It is important that they know how to keep young children safe. The most important lesson from this training is safety," said Klein.

On the last session of the clinic, the students’ role-played baby-sitting scenarios. This included changing diapers. Other scenarios were strangers at the door, baby-sitting for the first time, severe weather warnings, and the five-minute spot check.

The Treynor Junior Treynor Women and the Treynor Optimist Club sponsor the Treynor Baby Sitting Clinic. The Extension Service has been very helpful in providing this class to the Treynor school students.
